Today is friendship day. Friendship Day celebrations take place on the first Sunday of August every year. But What is friendship?

Emotional and unconditional bondage between two souls is friendship. A guy who is practical, straight forward, understanding and honest in thought, deed and action and available to stand by at the time of indispensability is a true friend. A person who accepts another as and how he/she is at any point of time and not for the one who and what he/she is, is indeed a friend. Friendship never could be forced upon, it buds at the beginning, develops gradually over a period of time and matures to withstand any phase of adverse condition. The base for friendship is 'Trust', reciprocal sincerity is its lifeline. Interaction is essential for active and lasting friendship. Sensitivity, sacrifice, wisdom, courage, quick-wit, humor are some of the qualities in an ideal friend.

Friendship is not a password to hurt feelings/sentiments, explore privacy, or encroach upon breathing space. Nor, it is binding for a friend to always suffer physically, socially and mentally to appease a friend to save the friendship, since, friendship does not mean slavery. Never, could there exist a true friendship where it is not valued. Neither, it would last if used, as a weapon for exploitation in any form. A friend would never disgrace his/her friend or tolerate if someone does. A friend would always respect his friend's individuality. An egoistic dictator or a blind follower, in spite of having a number of other good qualities cannot be regarded a friend, since a friend is quite a person who neither leads nor follows but walks along together in the right direction. Friendship is a bridge to cross over the barriers such as caste, creed, colour, religion, nationality, age, sex, social-status etc. It is always better to have a few ideal friends rather than a bunch of foolish or selfish friends. Since, these individuals would be too harmful in all respect and would cause more damage rather than any good. So, one should pick and choose a friend and retain him/her till his/her last breath, since true friendship with an ideal friend is a divine relation.
